This past weekend was pretty jam-packed with activity and stimuli. I actually spent the better part of yesterday either feeling a little numb, or moping about my apartment, feeling vaguely unsettled.

The weekend started with a small rumble at some point during the day on Thursday - the terrible weather outside coincided with Nova's flight, and she was soon enough grounded in Indianapolis, of all places. She ended up taking a freaking bus to Chicago's O'Hare airport, where I then guided her as gently and calmly as possible to a warmly-lit taqueria a block from my apartment.

We had dinner there, poor Nova decompressing over an awful travel day, about to gnaw through her new laptop she was so hungry. We then chilled at my place for the rest of the evening - she was entirely evil and brought a whole container full of BPAL perfumes for me to try (and steal!). I played Halo online as well, introducing Nova to the wacky beekeepers. Woody tried to get me to play Mario Kart, but I can only grab a wifi signal strong enough whilst standing in my shower. I am sure Nova thinks I am strange enough already. And even though she and I had no trouble at all hanging out in person after a ten year gap, I just didn't feel right about going to huddle in my tub, muttering, "dang it, stupid Wario red-shelled Peach before I could power slide grrrrrrruhhhh!"

I set the alarm too damned early the next morning, but I had to: groceries were on the way. I fixed up slices of tomato and onion for the bagels and cream cheese and lox I got, and we had a mighty fine breakfast, we did, and Nova plugged in all of her electronics, and grabbed a decent signal from the neighbors for her laptop which held steady the entire weekend.

And then, we headed out.

Nova was on a mission to get a particular computer magazine, and figured that in a fair, large city like Chicago, we'd be more likely to carry it at one of our bookstores. So we headed due east on the bus, chatting the whole while (hoo boy, did we talk on and on), landing near the Lake at one of the busier intersections in the city. We stopped at B&N and Borders with no luck on the magazines, but we did stop in at Cost Plus to see about some Ladybug cookies. We also meandered into a Body Shop and Bath and Body Works, and then went up to the top of the Century Landmark to visit my ilovebees payphone.

Lunch was at Penny's Noodles, which made my heart glad and warm, especially with a Thai iced coffee to sweeten the deal of a huge cheap bowl of sprouts, cilantro, noodles, and sauteed chicken. We then caught the Brown Line all the way up to Lincoln Square, to our demise in the form of Merz Apothecary.

Merz Apothecary is a long, well-stocked shop, full to the brim with approximately one million delicious-smelling soaps. In addition to the soaps were at least two bottles of cola-scented perfume. And um, chai-flavored honey sticks. And um, yeah. Next door, a curio shop had a back section of incense, including little baggies of large chunks of solid amber. Man oh man. I need to go back to Merz at some point, just to ogle all the different items once more, and to look for a few specific things I found at their website that I didn't happen to see when I was there.

To refresh our shop-wearied souls, we walked across Lincoln Square to Coldstone Creamery, and had ourselves some ice cream. Then, we took the train back down and around the Loop, and then headed back to my apartment. The sun had set, and the world was suddenly plunged into super-bitter sub-zero temps. Even though we were considering seeing Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, we decided indoors was much better than standing on line at Ashland and Foster, unsticking our frozen nostrils.

So, we ordered from Leona's, and kept toasty warm, applying cats where necessary.

Okay, I'm taking hot tub off my 'things to buy when all growed up & well employed list' & replacing it with whirlpool multi-media spa. Maybe I can tie the water jet system into the forcefeed back...
