I just got this e-mail:

Excuse me for interrupting your day. I have been asked to infor you of the death of Bruce Cain-Whitlock.
Bruce became ill at home on December 9th was taken to Saint Francis Hospital. He passed away December 12 at
5:55pm that evening. His mother will be holding a memorial service sometime after the first of the year. I do not have her adss at this time but will forward to anyone wanting it. I can be contacted at:
michaelhowell1757@att.com

My sympathy to you.

Mike

For those of you who don't know, Bruce was a Puppetmaster for both Lockjaw and Metacortechs. He was (infamously and famously) the author for the character of Wongmo in the Metacortechs game.

I can't even think right now. oh my god.

I have no words. None at all.

edited to add: the email Mike provided bounced back when I tried to write to him, so I wrote back to Wolf's address to ask for memorial info. I'll post it here when I get it, as I am not likely to be able to make it.

I have no idea what any of that stuff is, or what it means in terms of who Bruce is or what he does. But I am sorry for your loss.

A lot of the game design work I do is centered around Alternate Reality Games, and the first two full efforts I worked on were named Lockjaw and Metacortechs. As grassroots efforts, we did this for the love of it - in our spare time after work, etc.

During the Metacortechs game, which was based on the Matrix universe, Bruce wrote a lot of content for a New Age-y con man character named Wongmo. Lots of really funny stuff.

There's a part of me that wishes that I knew him better. But I did know him pretty well in one way; through his art. And through that knowledge I feel a real and strong connection to Wolf.

Through that way of expressing himself, he touched a lot of people. He will be missed, by myself and many others.

Oh that is so sad. He was a great person, and besides Wongmo he was the wonderful Rev. Dan Lee in Lockjaw. He was witty, warm and a great inspiration.

I hope wherever he is, he and Terry are together and happy.

Oh, no. :) I remember Rev. Dan Lee, and his memorial for him on Unforums. That's just heartbreaking.

I just saw this. I had absolutely no idea. This is a real shock. For anyone who didn't know, Bruce lived fairly close to me in Indianapolis, and we met several times for lunch (after Lockjaw) as well as collaborating together on Metacortechs. He was a really good guy, as well as being a devoted partner to his boyfriend, Terry, who unfortunately also passed away a few years back. We had lost touch a bit over the past year or so, but this is absolutely crushing news to hear.

I am really, really sad to hear this, and my greatest sympathies go out to Bruce's friends, family, as well as all of us who were lucky enough to work with him on various projects. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Also, Krystyn, if you are able to get memorial info, please also email it to me if you can, as I am in Florida through the end of this week and have only intermittent access to LJ but can check my email. If the memorial is after I get back to Indy this Sunday, I will try my best to be there. Thanks.

Jesus. Sorry for the late response, wasn't able to access an actual computer while out of town. Thoughts and prayers with Bruce's family, friends, and everyone who got to know him through the work he did. I'm so sorry, Wellsie.
