I brought Sim Tower to work. It would not work. Windows NT doesn't happen to play nice with this particular game. Through the wonders of Google, I have now cleverly dropped some .dlls into various directories in order to cajole this game into coming to life.

Little tiny silhouettes turning red as they wait for elevators! Little maids turning down beds methodically, leaving the hotel spotless by noon thirty. The constantly ringing phones, the tiny Santa flying across the sky at the end of every fourth quarter. Mmm, sims. I've been craving a bit of gaming lately based on repetitive goal-oriented crap. Dunno why - it's not inherently interesting or imaginative. But I find it soothing on occasion. I admitted to someone just the other day that I miss the old-skool version of Windows defrag - I used to catch myself watching it chunk through my hard drive, one aqua-colored block at a time. I suppose it's accidental meditation, a sort of REM action standby for when I have a lot on my mind. Sim Tower does the same for me.

I have started drinking coffee again, but I think I need to stop. It leaves me feeling entirely unsettled for a good half hour or so. I might need to revitalize my tea love, once more. A bit of caffeine is alright, but the actual makeup of coffee seems to be disagreeing with me as of late. It's kind of sad, as I really do like coffee, but even if it's some weird psychosomatic thing, I'd rather do without that half hour of jitters and slight nausea. It's just nice to have one beverage that tastes like something - the only other thing I ever drink is water.

hot beverage of choice for astronauts

You're probably already familiar with the Republic of Tea line, but in the slim chance you're not, I highly recommend it. I've also found that a fresh cup of regular black Lipton with a slice of fresh lime to be enjoyable (provided you keep it out of your eyes). As a non tea alternative, you may wish to try adding a scoop of instant Tang to a cup of hot water. Various flavors of Jello are also agreeable.

Indeed! Republic of Tea and I go way back, from the bookstore days (I worked in the B&N Cafe). I have a full can of the loose rose petal tea, from RoT.

I also still have three boxes of tea that I bought while in Scotland: Strawberry, Spiced Indian Chai, and English Rose. I also have all manner of orange spice, that winter plum blend, and about 5 different kinds of green (need to find me a good toasted rice matcha one).

Hee, Jell-O drink. How odd. "Tastes sweet, helps your nails grow stronger!"

There should be a secret RoT handshake or something. I also have a full can of the loose rose petal tea, but I suspect for different reasons. I received it gift & found it to be ponderous floral. I guess I was expecting something more akin to the jasmins I enjoy so much. Then again, perhaps I've been preparing it incorrectly - if you have any tips, I'd be glad to hear them.

Ha, I totally figured "hot cup of Tang" would elicit a laugh before the Jello suggestion. And yes, it does make for great nails & hair.

And Tang is the camping cure for everything. Includeing sipholis, according to the boys in my boyscout troop. I mean it was invented by NASA, it HAS to be good.

almost eerie

The first time I cooked up a serving of hot orange flavored drink was on a Boy Scout camping trip. I was pre-coffee age & needed something warm at the dawn hours of the day. Interesting coincidence.

It appears to be a pretty medicinal thing to drink. What, is it a diuretic or something?

Im sure it is, but when someone spits into the boiling pot (while chewing blue liquorice) while the guys back it turned, it quickly becomes something that no one wants to try.

ahh good ol' Sim Tower... I'd recommend Sim Ant as well, but it's a little more frantic, and it sounds like you need mind-numbing drama, rather than intense insect action.

Ja. I love The Sims, and have a few of the expansions, but sometimes the amount of choice and storybuilding (will your alter self become a rock star, or a scientist? should they practice guitar, or play chess?) is a bit much for me when I want to just sort of drown in data.

I've never played Sim Ant, though. Sounds frenetic. I have Sim City (the original), Sim Copter, and Sim Island. I also love Rollercoaster Tycoon and Caesar III, but I can't find my discs anywhere. Grr.

I had never even heard of SimHealth. Odd.

While I do love SimCity, SimEarth is a close second, even though my copy was for the SNES (joypad not the best controller for SimFillInTheBlankHere games). Sometimes I just left it on for the tranquil background music.

heh yeah there are some definite oddities there, and not all are from Maxis. And what's with that Sim Copter? heh

Sim Ant is amazing. I used to play it all the time in my younger days. One of the most fun things to do is a neat little easter egg that lets you take control of the ant-eating spider. You may not kill all the red ants...but you can sure soften them up for your black ants.

I totaly did the same thing with my defrag! I think that it was facinateing to be able to "watch" the computer doing real work infront of you. Like watching a seemstress sew or blacksmith hammer away at a peice of steel. Utterly boreing but absolutly facinateing and yes meditative.

It is nice to know I am not alone in this.

we are many & we must defrag

From: [identity profile] rand-mod-6.livejournal.com
The solution is clear: we need a game that defrags your hard drive. Or at least provides similar graphics. Think about: the better you play, the better you hard drive performance. If you really wanted to go all out, you get add some way to trade hard drive file allocation snap shots. Imaging trying to defrag your parent's hard drive manually. Seriously, if we can have a game about SCSI hard drive controllers I think a defrag game is totally reasonable-ish.

Tea couldn't hurt, but no need to give up coffee entirely. Coffee is good for you!
