My throat is raw, and I am exhausted. I keep feeling like I want to pass out. I am stuck at Reception, again, and I would feel really badly about asking to be back in my office today and making someone else sit up here, since it's so dead and we're closing early, anyway.

I am seriously considering skipping lunch so I can spend every precious minute I can sleeping. Take that Aeron chair, crank it back, prop my feet on my guest chair, and snuggle into my fleece.

I thought maybe it was raining this morning, because as I stumbled about the apartment and tried to pack some last-minute things in my carry-on, I could hear the occasional snick-wick of tires on wet pavement.

Oh ho ho no. Not rain. Snow.

It's actually sunny out now, so I wonder how much of it has melted, but I know that when I surfaced from the subway tunnel and faced the prospect of tugging my weekender bag through slush, I opted instead to hail a cab and pay a few paltry bucks for my diva-like comfort. The world was blue and grey as I grasped with both hands the handle on my small wheely case, and the snow whipped around me wetly, getting into my hair and curling it wildly. I could feel the Powerpuff Girls keychains I had attached to the zippers on my dotcom laptop backpack swinging and hitting my side. My sinuses want a nap. My mood is vulnerable and quiet. I keep answering the phone with as few words as possible. I don't want to talk, I don't want to make facial expressions. I am trying not to sneeze or cough, and I am wondering what sort of meds might be good to purchase on my break, if I can work up the energy to go out there.

In a way, I wish I could stay home, all by myself, and just sit and relish the quiet, get used to this state of living.

I wish I didn't have this cold.

Does rum make colds better? Perhaps there is rum in my future.

Citrus has vitamin C, which is crucial to fighting off colds.

Mint is an herbal remedy for colds...

Honey has bee pollen, also useful for colds and immunity boosts...

I think you see where I am going with this.

Don't drink orange juice.

Dumping that much sugar into your blood stream all at once actually temporarily *depresses* your immune system.

/end unsolicited medical advice.

Your advice fits perfectly with my plan: lime juice is the intended citric element to a mojito!

Well, then, all should be well. :-)

So does vegetable soup, toasted cheese, and watching guilty-pleasure movies while lying on the sofa under a blanket. I'm just making some suggestions, feel free to customize.

I think the cab was worth it. How often does one have a cold, after all? (Hoping the answer is "not often".)

omg your suggestions are nearly making me cry, here. they sound so lovely.

I don't get sick often, but when I do, it tends to really knock me out.

Well, since you are too late and probably don't have access to an herbal remedy call Clear Heat, which works like a charm, then try hot lemon water (hot water with some fresh lemon slices - about two per mug is good). Lemon is an astringent which works to clear mucus from the system. My acupuncturist told me all about the healing properties of lemon, but of course I can't remember them all - especially since he turned me on to Clear Heat, because neither I nor my husband have been sick in two years now thanks to that stuff. I suggest you find an herbalist for next time.

Oh, and chicken soup and sleep are indeed excellent as well. Though I agree that snuggling on the couch with great old movies is a sure fire winner. Good luck!

Not so mysterious. Especially if you follow Bob. Hints abound there.

Hope your cold is LONG gone. Glad you enjoyed your time in LA and in Florida. And wherever that Joseph Cornell thing was.

And I'm very sorry about your car accident! I am glad you are ok, and I am sorry about your car. I have been in a multitude of accidents, but never a hit and run. That would suck suck SUCK!

See, I am just catching up with everything since the cold. :)

When I was a speech team coach, one of my declamation students would complain of having phlegm issues before each round. I'd have him squeeze some fresh lemon into a water bottle with lukewarm water (to keep it from making him more thirsty, or making his body have to warm up chilled water), and then keep one or two slices in the bottle itself, to keep it strong enough to cut through gunk.

Maybe I will make them stop at a store on the way to our condo tonight. I so wish I did not have to get on a plane today.

Sometimes when feeling cruddy with a sore throat and not having to go anywhere, I whip up a rum "toddy" of white rum, orange juice, and maple syrup nuked gently in the microwave. I suppose it'd be better with a clove in it or something, but my spice cupboard is rather spare most of the time and I usually don't have them about.

-- Steve's not sure about the medicinal qualities, but it sure takes the edge off caring. Oh, and not recommended for pre-flight periods for reasons recently in the news.

Hmm. On your own head (and sinuses) be it. :)

It just occurs to me that adding a bit of lemon juice would cut the sweetness a bit for those who prefer... have to "experiment" with that sometime.

-- Steve, alas, would probably have to make do with the bottled lemon juices most of the time. Is there any actual lemon in those?

No, but drink enough and you won't care.

I saw 'code' in the subject and thought OMG KLOO!

I spent a good thirty seconds trying to decipher it before I smacked myself for being stupid and realized what was going on:)

Hope you feel better! And safe travels.

Let's put it this way.

Is there ever a time where you wonder "maybe I should have rum?" where rum shouldn't be there?

I say no.
