Jul. 15th, 2005 08:13 pmI drove to work this morning and was twenty minutes late because summer = construction in Chicago, and so this one street was closed and so I thought I'd be clever and take the expressway to the next street down, where I need to go anyway, but there was no way to cross all those lanes in time so I stayed on and thought I'd do the next major exit but missed that too and so I took Lake Shore Drive, coming up from the south.
There is a curve on the concrete ramps that takes you above the first reach of the South Side, and you can see churches and cranes and buildings and train cars and smokestacks and off in the distance is the skyline, so gorgeous and powerful.
I nearly ditched work right there, except I had emailed my co worker from my phone to say I was going to be late, so I very well couldn't just not show up, but oh how I wanted to capture the hazy morning 18th street vibe, the cranes spindly and etched into the glowing sepia sky behind, nearly subsumed by light. Spidery geometric tendrils. I wanted to fill an entire memory stick with light.
I am home now, and my office is filled with dim twilight, and it's so lovely I may just zone out for the next ten minutes and watch the sun slide over everything like a warm hand on my side, my leg my arm my neck my breath caught in my throat for this is summer, even with very little sweat. Thick broth of haze and sweetness, lazy tired eyes and languor.

Date: 2005-07-16 03:22 am (UTC)constrictionconstruction here too. Luckily, though, the bridge closures were last weekend. The best views in this area are from the buildings, not of them.
