Back in college I was in the kitchen one day when our terminally liberal artsy house president asked, "What is the meaning of life?" Another housemate from mainland China answered, without a moment's hesitation, "Struggle." At the time I thought he was just repeating the Chinese communist party line, but now I'm not so sure.

I guess people have evolved to do best with something to struggle for because at least in the past, survival was always a struggle. Not going bat guano in the absence of something to work toward wasn't a useful trait.
