If you're a tourist to the fine city of Chicago, try to avoid taking public transportation during rush hour. Go - have a nice dinner somewhere. Sit by the lake, have a beer, or an ice cold something. Enjoy life, and when it is 6 PM, feel free to invade the turnstiles en masse, taking your time inserting the transit card every which way but correctly, and then attempt to board a train car before everyone has exited. When in the train, cluster in clumps and talk loudly and giggle, especially right near the doors. Don't move too much when someone needs to get on or off, and definitely stare at everyone around you.
Just make sure it's before 4:30, and after 6*.
My commute home took an extra half hour today.
*Yes, people can ride the CTA whenever the fuck they please, duh. I am a little confused why a tourist would force the issue, though, when a train car is already to capacity, and people are just trying to get home.
