Hopefully that will be updated quickly with the information you need in order to answer the question, within the first few payphones.

http://ilovebees.blogspot.com has a good primer on what the hell I'm talking about. It's OK to feel confused; there's a lot of information there.

Oh man, finally an explanation! Thank you!

Unfortunately most pay phones around here block incoming calls. :(

It's true that there have been a lot of broken payphones (physically broken, as well as those that sound like they accept incoming calls, but don't really), but you should look at payphone directory sites, and perhaps search the unforums for your area, to see a description of any axons in your area that -have- worked.

The D.C. folks have had a great time picking up 8 to a dozen calls in one shot, so I wouldn't give up hope, if this is something that interests you. :) The people at the forums are very helpful (especially if you've shown that you've helped yourself, first), and IRC is a good way to get an immediate answer to questions you may have ...

Because yeah, a lot phones don't accept incoming calls. But obviously, there are hundreds that do. The puppetmasters of the game aren't choosing these phones randomly, it seems. They seem to be aiming specifically for phones that have been known to work in the past.

F'rinstance, I helped activate a phone that was actually on a train platform. We paid the fare to get in, after testing the big bank of phones outside the gates - none of those accepted incoming. Yet, the ones on the platform did. Telcos are tricky things - nothing's consistent in their world. :)

I'm sorry about your aunt.

When my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May, my view of the world turned upside-down for a while. Where I'd been reading newspaper obituaries for the interesting life stories before, now I saw nothing but the broken hearts of the families left behind. Where I looked out and saw busy people focused on the mundane activities of their lives, now I only saw people who would have no choice but to experience intense loss and grief at some point. There is no escaping it, for any of us.

It's a hard thing. A normal part of life, but so hard.

Best,
Kate
