the rest of the weekend

Friday evening turned out to be this cozy feel-good sort of night that happens when you're least expecting it, but then afterwards, as you're lying in bed smiling about the good time you had, it all seems obvious. Hell is other people, sure, but add a couple of bottles of wine to the mix and a home-cooked meal, and suddenly everything is so much rosier.
The other people were a few of my co workers, Svetlana, and the fiancee of one of the said co workers. We met at Lisa's little garden apartment in Andersonville, and she served up spicy bowls of red beans and rice with sausage, slow-cooked in a crock pot all day. "It's got double meat!" she grinned proudly as she grated cheese and set out a container of sour cream. We laughed and sipped wine, Black Swan Merlot and shoot, I can't remember, but some chardonnay. The merlot was very nice, and we were all pleasantly tipsy by the time we headed up the street to the Neofuturarium to see The Emmett Project. Another co worker, the new front desk woman, Mindy, is the stage manager.
Racial lynchings are never a happy topic, but the play was done frankly and sensitively, the middle section done completely in the dark (with accents of neo-typical flashlight and also matchlight) as the player's words painted a picture of what atrocities were done to Emmett as he died. Lisa and I actually "lost our shit" (her words) as we sat in the dark. I think I sniffled first, and then she sniffled, and then we just sat there, weeping in the dark until the lights came up and the piece came fairly gently to a close.
Saturday late morning Svet and I dragged ourselves out of bed and got ready in a leisurely sort of way, making it into Oak Park and walking up to the Lake Theater about five minutes before A Mighty Wind was due to start. Inside, Pam and Ben had reserved a row near the back (perfect distance from the screen, hurrah!) for a whole mess of us to see the movie together. It was a lot of fun that way. I forgot about the other movies in the 'series' (Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show), and we all laughed and laughed and laughed. Good times. Afterwards, a delicious capper to the afternoon spent at Khyber Pass - Indian lunch buffet.
It was a busy weekend; it felt full. I felt like I was touching base with friends again, feeling the earth solid beneath my feet, feeling the sun hit my face, warming it. Garam masala, chocolate candies, rose milk, red wine, cayenne, red bean.

Oh, um, wait. It was the Neofartarium. Hmf. Never mind, I thought the first MATRIX movie was flatulent enough, thanks. I'll pass.
