This picture was taken in 1934 or 1935--in the midst of the Great Depression. She shared a room with her grandmother in her aunt's house so that she could go to college to study chemistry. She was engaged to a man 18 years older than she was, who had two children from a previous marriage. She counted her pennies so that she could buy a bunch of grapes for lunch. I don't know how she found enough money to have this picture taken.
