Today seems much more cozy at work than yesterday.

Yesterday was a cavalcade of absences in my department - two people who write their own schedules wrote themselves out of Monday completely. Another co worker called in because of her arthritis, and was not able to walk, and needed to get more meds for her condition. Another called in because of a family crisis.

Which left ... me. Until my other co worker, who is filling in for my vacationing boss, could come in and cover my breaks and such.

It was vaguely amusing to me to have one of the head honchos in HR running around trying to fill up coffee pots and set out pastries for the breakfast setup. I honestly couldn't do it myself, since the front desk needed to be manned, and no one else around knew how to handle the phones.

The front desk is not an entirely loathesome place to be, except for the fact that it feels like I am sitting in a huge fish bowl.

Today I am ensconced in my office, pumpkin string lights and lava lamp aglow, Silly Putty sitting in containers to my left, crystallized ginger to snack on to my right.

I worked on cryptograms today at lunch. It was oddly satisfying, even if it was simple letter substitution. There is still that thrill of seeing the words and syntax emerge like stone rubbings or lemon juice writing on paper held over a candle.

Cryptograms are my second favorite thing in GAMES Magazine!

Paint-by-Numbers are the first. :)

Indeed!

Remember when Paint by Numbers first came out?

I need to get my subscription up and running again. I am glad to see there are still Fake Ads, but have there been Hidden Contests lately?

I also worked on the World's Most Ornery Crossword the other day. Ah, puzzles.

I suck at them, but they are fun to do, anyway.

I'm afraid that lately I've received way more magazines than I've had time to actually look through and do anything with. Aiee... work work work. I actually remember when they couldn't come out fast enough, and I'd wring each issue dry and be doing the only puzzles left, the lame ones I didn't like, just to have some to do til the next one came out! And that was when they were *monthly*!! (My family's been subscribing since before I can remember.)

Alas, now even though they're mostly every other month, in some cases I'll get a new one before I've even had time to *open* the previous one.

Thank goodness for plane trips, I guess. :)
