I have a friend who would swear by "pink noise," which I guess is white noise, but put through a sound filter so it is not so random--the theory being the annoying frequencies are removed, giving you a "soothing" and natural background sound like the wind or ocean.
He would start up an app on his computer, put on headphones, and work all day listening to the stuff. I tried it once. I was ready to kill anyone within reach after about 30 seconds.
