Pokerin'

At work, I sit in a cave of an office - upon moving in, I automatically arrange to have one of the Office Services dudes come in and unscrew the fluorescent tubes, and I use a small desk lamp (or two, when someone comes in to talk with me) to illuminate. I figure, I'm sitting here all day, there's no reason to bathe in the flat, headache-inducing white light if I don't have to. Everyone else gets to walk around soaking up natural light from the windows, while I am shackled here, answering a constantly-ringing telephone.

Trouble is, the machine I use at my desk is slow as hell, and does not deal well with Last Call Poker. The resources get sucked up within ten hands, and the entire operation will freeze, especially if people are being particularly chatty.

So, when I cover my co worker at the front desk, I'll try to get a few hands in. It's not always the easiest thing to do, since not only do I answer calls, but a majority of overhead pages get requested through that phone, and actual people come up to the desk, wanting things. However, I muddle by, and get to socialize a bit before I head back to my cave.

The phones went nuts right after I split a tiny pot with someone at a table ($12.50! Woo!), and so when the pockets came around, I was not particularly fazed by the K/9 offsuit I was dealt.

Then, the CTO called. From his cellphone. And he sounded like he was in a car. Generally, when VIPs call like that, one should really pay attention, because they tend to need things. Now.

The flop came down: Q/10/J.

Whoah.

He was actually concerned about the number of solicitation calls getting routed to his extension, and discussed how he might need to change his number, etc. etc. and I can see the queue line backing up behind him on the board, but there's nothing I can do about it - those customers wanting to buy our software are just gonna hafta wait.

Meanwhile, I am completely slow-playing the entire table, betting 9 dollars here, calling a 20 dollar bet there. When someone ramped it up a bit, I called and called, and I white lied to the CTO about his issue, because I realized that as I was misleading the table into thinking I might have a fair-to-middlin' two pair, I also needed to assure my caller that we'd resolve the issue -- even though his issue was essentially all my fault. Hilariously, I raked in about $7K in on the table, and it looks like even though I inadvertantly pissed a superior off, I have plenty of ass coverage, and that should turn out OK, too.
