I spent four days in Houston, soaking up sun and warmth and wide stretches of pale roadways. The trees are hearty and tall, but also seem on the verge of becoming papery dry. The color saturation is dust yellow nearly everywhere - the sun's yellow pigment has tinted the pavement and the sky and the leaves on the trees, leaving us with a dusk and a night that is quiet and dark and cool, in October.

It was good to see my brother. Because it was my inaugural visit to his new home in a new home state (his wife is from Houston, so they relocated on her behalf), we didn't really totally relax into daily routine, or anything too deep. The DVD I brought from this year's ARGfest went unplayed, and I didn't really talk about my life. We went out to eat, and we went to the Renfest, meeting Brandy's parents, who wore their feathered hats and were on a Quest for Sesame Chicken on a Stick.

I didn't sleep much, but it wasn't for any sort of reaction to the heat. It was actually pretty temperate the entire time I was there - reaching up into the upper 80's, but with minimal humidity.

We played lots of pinball, and we dug out the Atari 2600, and we watched six episodes of the first season of Lost, and I got to hang out with a couple of people I know from playing ilovebees and Halo 2 on XBoxLive. I wish I could've spent more time with those guys - we saw the new Wallace & Gromit after laughing it up in a cafe, and it was just so, so nice to put faces with names. I already knew their voices, of course, so it was fun to just sort of bask in their personas, and be able to look at them. Ubercado and malice are fine, fine people, and I was honored that they came out to spend time with me.

I feel a little sad today - I had to come back to my job, which was seriously burning me out by the end of last week. I also miss my brother a lot, and I wonder how much stubbornness will keep him from finding happiness in his gigantic shiny house in the Houston 'burbs.

It was nice, though, to get back into the city, where things are visible and blue-tinted and a bit more accessible. There is less of a divide between people, at least in the general mix of things. The air is cooler, and I am craving taffy apples and candle-lit nights and roasted pumpkin soup and buttered toast.
