Oct. 20th, 2002 11:13 pmThe weekend was nice and solid - 6 total houseguests, tucked into nooks and crannies, sleeping amidst prowling cats and computer accessories.
I carved the pumpkin, and it turned out to be as cute as a button. I am really proud. This is the first time I've ever done a Jack O' Lantern on my own, you see. Scott and I had bought pumpkins in previous years, but the apathy we'd been fostering manifested in an untouched pumpkin growing soft on the kitchen table well into November ...
So it was nice to take the little serrated knife and carve out a happy little face, and then rinse the seeds, slather them with the very last of the olive oil, and dust them with salt and chili powder and garlic powder, and set them to roast in the oven for a while.
I played video games, had people to play them with, and managed to break my brain so well that I floated off into a never-never land for a little while, and then into sleep. This weekend was all about sleep - we all slept in like warm, sluggish sleeping things, rising only when the light was too bright too ignore any more, when a bit of breakfast was all we needed. Some coffee, some bacon. The staples of life.
We saw our friend Lisa totally kick ass in a production of The Wild Party over at Circle Theater Saturday night. Wow, she was really excellent, and the actors had a very good night - they seemed on. Also, the show wasn't too badly written, not what the reviews would have you believe. Plus, how can you go wrong with at least a dozen simulated sex acts on stage, with several more off-stage moments implied? Drugs, gin, and debauchery, set to music. And flapper dresses. Much fun.
There was a reason Chris Jones specifically mentioned Lisa's performance in the show, and it wasn't just because everyone got to see her boobies. She was sincerely fantastic, and I felt .. so proud of her, really. It's not like I ever had low expectations of her, but I guess it's just such a thrill to see someone be so unexpectedly wonderful in a role. It was a treat.
The weekend was a blur of comforts, when it comes down to it. Brownies, banana bread, sushi, green tea ice cream, Mudslides, Stoli vanil and Coke, video games, roasted pumpkin seeds, eggplant parmesan (which everyone said they loved), sunshine pouring through windows, dying my hair a bit redder, getting a braided rope of sweetgrass from Brian for use as a smudge stick, feeling happy and comfortable in the morning as I stepped around sleeping bodies tucked into blankets and sleeping bags and pillows all over the floors ...
Nice weekend. I wish it had been longer.
