Reading

Taking another trip to the library today on lunch, I think.

In the meantime, here's some stuff I've read so far in 2006:

Clouds End, Sean Stewart
Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids, Kenzaburo Oe
All the Myriad Ways, Larry Niven (I can never see his name without automatically reversing it like on the Magic card. How many nerd points do I get for that?)
Coke Machine Glow, Gordon Downie
The Dark is Rising, Susan Cooper

Right now, I'm reading The Draco Tavern by Niven. It's a collection of interrelated short stories, and one hell of a fun read.

I've read a few of those stories as they get published in Analog. Didn't know there was a collection! Sweet!

What did you think of Myriad Ways, btw? I don't think I ever actually asked you.

Admittedly, I skipped one or two essays that were a bit too dry (albeit tongue-in-cheek) to make for good train reading. I know I skimmed The Grandfather Problem, but I found Myriad Ways and the Moon one to be really compelling. I dunno -- all the story ones were really enjoyable, although they were so simply-rendered (and masterfully so), that they were sort of depressing.

Thought experiments + my brain = over-thinkiness and DOOM, on occasion

His apocalyptic whimsy is fun, and yet disturbing!

yeah sometimes he gets so wrapped up in the details of his world-building and such that I just need to take a break and/or skip over things.

And I do prefer his short stories over the novels, as it limits that detail focus a bit.

Is that the same Gord Downie who's in the Tragically Hip?

Indeed. It's a book of his poetry that xnbomb sent to me for Christmas. It's wonderful stuff.

I just finished reading Boris Akunin's "The Winter Queen" which is a Russian Spy/Intelligence/Police story. Very gud.

I put it on my list.

The Dark is Rising, Susan Cooper

Is this [livejournal.com profile] phaedra_amunet's fault, or just a startling coincidence?

I'd always meant to read it, but I was curious to see the relativist issues presented in the series, so.

Yes and no.
