Helpful

OK, so this morning marks the second time this week that I have been stopped on this one corner right across from my office, and asked for directions to Union Station.

How odd.

I find that I go through spates of incidents like this, where I am approached more often than anyone else around me, for directions. I don't think I look particularly helpful, really, but maybe it's just that I so often feel comfortable and at ease in the wash of downtown crowds, that my local-ness shows through? I have no idea.

Both times, the queries came from early 20-something women who seemed just the tiniest bit frazzled, and a little annoyed at themselves for not finding the damned place on their own, already. They also both asked me in the same exact manner: looking about, and then just landing eyes on me and speaking before even checking to make sure I was paying attention. Because it was the same street corner both times, I gave the same exact directions both times.

I got a little more sleep last night than usual, and so even though my eyes still feel sort of heavy and warm in their sockets, my self-perception is noticeably much more positive, and there's actual good color to my skin, and this coffee tastes really, really, good. It doesn't just taste of survival.

I think you look helpful. Also cute and friendly. Were I a person annoyed that I could not find Union Station, you are the type of stranger I would approach for help.

Then again, I think some of us just radiate 'I know where things are' even in situations where we don't, actually, know where stuff is. Ever been asked directions in places you've just arrived?

I am asked for directions all the time. In my city, of course, but when I travel I get asked directions as well, most noticeably Seattle (about 2 hours after I arrived) and London (I had just come in on the tube from the airport).

I get that as well, too, pita!

Yah, I must look just generally at ease, most places I go.
