I just spent a glorious while in the Cavern and other places in the Uru universe. It is amazing and awesome to have Myst Online back. There is something so instantly worthy about the experience. The imagery/graphics are really gorgeous, and the music is sometimes achingly lovely.

It is a place I have spent many hours in, so tonight felt like riding the ol' bicycle - I collected a bunch of Relto pages (and yes, the Island one was hanging around in its usual spot), kicked a fire marble or two, did NOT dance on the Heek table, got my KI, ran the Cleft puzzle, and posed for a group photo in the Uru Obsession Bevin.

None of that makes much sense to most of you, but luckily for you, Uru is currently free and open source. The servers are still pretty limited and laggy, but it's still pretty awesome that they're making this experience happen at all.

You can start here:

I can answer questions, and the community that has been playing Uru since 2003 or so is an extremely helpful and gorgeous bunch of people.

The Cavern awaits. Fiendish puzzles. Go.

WOW, this is really cool. I have been waiting for Myst Online to come back for YEARS, and figured it must be a lost cause by now. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I know! It's the game that wouldn't die!

Be aware that the servers are getting overloaded with the huge interest, so it may take a while for Cyan to acclimate, for people to get all patched and downloaded, etc.

I also had some issues with lag (but everyone was) - the game would freeze for a second every several seconds or so. It's not the worst, but definitely have patience, if you decide to go. :) It's worth a walk around the main City, at the very least.

Have you played much in the past?

Not in YEARS. I was hooked on the original and the sequel, and occasionally would think, "hmmm I should really see if it's been updated." That's how I found Myst online and was all excited until I saw that it was totally offline. So now I get to rediscover this game - it's really so beautiful.

I think you will really enjoy the proper Ages in this game - you can go co-op, or you can go it alone, and because the game's been around for a while, there are plenty of lovely and clear walkthroughs, so that you can really enjoy the graphics when you're not in the mood to solve some wacky math puzzle or whatever.

If you ever want to hit me up, I am there as 'krystyn' (all lowercase). My KI # is 74226, so feel free to add me as a buddy.

I can't get online. Waaaaaah. Evil temptress, to flash Cyany goodness before us and then withhold it!

I have no idea what your experience has been thus far, but I can highly recommend a cursory examination of the Technical sections of the Uru forums at MystOnline.com for any weird issues you may have. Most of them are pretty common issues, and plenty of people have provided almost immediate troubleshooting. Everyone's super-friendly there.

But, a couple tips for you:

The server's being hammered right now, and although they've made the patcher work better earlier today, you still may not get an auth response from the server, because it's 'full.' My advice is to kill the login window, and try again in a minute. You'll know when it's working, because your status bar *will* advance, and you will see it transitioning to the EULA/TOS and login credentials stuff.

However, here's the other tip: if you kill the patcher window process, be sure to check your task manager for multiple urulauncher.exe instances, and end those processes before attempting again, otherwise the patcher will never resolve.

Keep trying. I've gotten in twice. :) I am in the UruObsession Bevin, so let me know if you wish to join that one. I would be more than happy to get you invited and such.

I'm sure it's just the server being hammered; I can't get in at all. Same result today as yesterday. It freezes at "Checking for patcher update..." and stays there forever. If I hit Cancel, the message changes to "Shutting Down..." and stays there forever. I never see a status bar at all. And I've tried it immediately after turning on my computer fresh, so it's not leftover processes. Grrrrr.

Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll be able to try it. If I ever get in, I'd love to join you in Bevin.

What I've been doing to get in is to have Task Manager up while I try to log in. If I get "Checking for patcher update..." and it stays that way more than, say, 30 seconds, I hit Cancel, and then make sure the urulauncher.exe is no longer in my process list in Task Manager. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Basically, you're hoping for a chance that someone in the game has crashed or logged out, and you're snagging their spot in the tally. :)

You'll get in! I got in last night and the lag was appreciably better.

I got in!

...It really is just exactly like playing "URU: Ages of Myst," isn't it? I mean, I remember most of these puzzles. (Hey, maybe I'll actually finish the game this time!)

Excellent! Be sure to let me know what your KI # is some time, so we can chat if we're ever on at the same time. :) There should be some stuff that you have not done yet, like some of the garden ages that require multiple players. :) Woot woot!

Tried again last night and had no trouble getting in -- I'm guessing the initial rush has worn off somewhat. So how do I find my KI#?

I shall ask a non-spoilery leading question: Have you been to Gahreesen yet?

If you have no idea what Gahreesen is, have you been to a Bevin yet?

If you don't know from Bevin, have you had a chance to play with the Nexus?

Err... I'm not so good with the age names yet. Bevin and the Nexus I know, and yes, I've been to both. If Gahreesen is the age in which one acquires one's KI in the first place, then yes, I've been there and done that as well.

It occurs to me that I could also head to the Nexus and see whether "Gahreesen" is in the menu, and if it is just go there... Anyway, I've got a KI, I just don't know how to find my KI#. I'm sure it's something extremely easy.

Oh, OK! You've *got* the KI, yay!

Hit F2 a coupla times to bring up its interface:

On page 8 of the pdf, you'll see the fullscreen display of the KI in a screenshot, and along the bottom, you'll see the ID number, near the name. That's the KI#! :)
